De Chirico and Metaphysics
event
Desde el  07 nov 2020  hasta el  11 jul 2021
From November 7, 2020 to May 9, 2021, Palazzo Blue will be home to masterpieces by the maestro of "metaphysical" painting

Centaurs, archaeologists, mythological characters such as Orpheus, Hector, Adromache and Ulysses, statues, ruins, trains, mannequins and furniture – all mysteriously abandoned in sparse, gloomy architecture. Giorgio De Chirico's paintings seem to belong to the realm of dreams, or rather of nightmares. His works are a jumble of disturbing, surreal, enigmatic environments in which the observer grasps at any seeming clues to the story, trying to put together the objects arranged by the painter, in an attempt to make sense of it all; a search perhaps futile, but inevitable. "For a work of art to become immortal, it must always overcome the limits of humankind, without being concerned about common sense or logic" the artist wrote in his book "On metaphysical art" in 1919.

For the first time in Tuscany, the exhibition at Palazzo Blu in Pisa (titled "De Chirico and Metaphysics") from 7 November 2020 to 9 May 2021 is displaying the artist's personal collection, including a large number of works from the National Gallery of Rome which were donated in 1987 by the painter's wife, Isabella, and by the Giorgio and Isa de Chirico Foundation. The Palazzo is also displaying a series of true masterpieces, thanks to the support of the most prestigious national institutions of modern art, such as the Brera Art Gallery and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (MART). The exhibition takes you on a pensive journey through images and words that have left profound traces throughout the twentieth century and inspire new generations of artists today.

The exhibition chronologically presents works from the artist's entire prestigious career. The exhibition starts with the first "Böcklinian" work from the end of 90s, to masterful metaphysical paintings from the 2010s; from masterpieces of the "classical" early 1920s period of the Parisian "second metaphysics" to the Mysterious Baths of the 1930s (and the extraordinary research on former artists’s paintings, found in the still lifes, nudes and self-portraits created between the 30s and 50s), before finally reaching the radiant Neometaphysical period.
