White Carrara Downtown

Explore Carrara, famous throughout the world for its marble and quarries

Throughout the month of June White Carrara Downtown, a town-wide festival, hosts cultural walks, concerts and tastings, all aimed at rediscovering the marble land, where Michelangelo spent two years in order to learn from the “maestri del cavar marmi” (master marble quarrymen) .

The history, culture and delicacies of Carrara and its surrounding areas are celebrated through a series of art-themed itineraries, artisanal workshops open to the public, quarry excursions, performances, open-air sculpture and food and wine events. Additionally, special tourist packages allow participants to explore the territory through guided and thematic visits.

In past editions, the public had the chance to attend concerts in the spectacular setting of the Apuan quarries; among the performers was Goran Bregović. More than 80 workshops, studios and ateliers (in which more than 200 artists work) opened up their doors for a unique chance to witness art in the very place where it’s created: there was active participation from sculptors, painters, graphic artists, ceramicists and potters, photographers, designers, architects, young and emerging artists as well as established artists from every corner of the world.

Additionally, in order to help participants discover the secrets of this centuries-old city, rich in history, memory and art, numerous cultural strolls are organized around the city. This is a different way of experiencing culture, a more interactive experience with the chance to meet people, gaze upon shop windows surrounded by centuries-old city walls, take in monuments and workshops with breathtaking views, experience secret spaces and public and private venues that tell the story of Carrara’s marble and its people.
