Exploring Monte Calamita

Hiking along the island's old mining roads

This itinerary follows an ancient road which played an important role in the history of Capoliveri and which crosses the Calamita area. Following the old mining road you'll discover hidden bays, unique panoramas and pristine nature.

The full path winds along the eastern side of Monte Calamita but it is possible to divide it into three ring itineraries that follow the Costa dei Gabbiani, crossing incredible landscapes and losing yourself in the beauty of the sea.

Once you arrive at the Ripalte farm you can either head towards the wide gravel roads stopping at the lovely Buzzancone Bay with its small beach and Punta Nera; or head towards Poggio Turco. If you decide to continue to the bay you'll find side paths that lead towards the Carbonaia and Ginepro beaches. On clear days you can see as far as the Piomino Canal and its islands, the Maremma coast and the headlands of the Argentario.

After crossing the pine grove you arrive at four-part intersection: the southern roads head to the Costa dei Gabbiani along the high cliffs which are characteristic of the island and where a large colony of royal seagulls nest.
