Abetone is one of the largest ski resorts in the Apennines and has an ancient history. In the nineteenth century, Abetone was a destination for elite tourism, especially after the opening of the new railway line, La Porrettana. It has over 50 km of ski slopes in four beautiful valleys: the valley of Sestaione, the valley of Lima, the downstream of Scoltenna and the Val di Luce. Artificially snow-covered slopes and lifts that start from 1200 meters to 1950 meters above the sea level connect them. You can also practice cross-country skiing on two tracks and a ring for a total of 15km. Abetone is also the birthplace of Zeno Colò, an alpine ski racing champion.
During winter the Mount Amiata offers ski lovers a natural setting in the Europe's largest beech forests. The winter resort of Mount Amiata offers 10km of trails for alpine skiing with 8 lifts that can be used by buying the PASS AMIATA, and 10.5 km of trails for Nordic skiing. The history of Mount Amiata as ski resort goes back to the early 20th century. Even before the war, there were skiers who visited the Amiata mountain when it snowed; during the Fascist period a springboard in the first refuge was built for the most daring: in fact, someone already skied taking advantage of the natural trails between a tree and the other. In 1947 a rudimentary ski lift was built by recycling the engine of a motorcycle. Fifteen years later, the first single-seated chair lift was built. The great success of Amiata lasted from 1970 to 1986. From 1984 to 1986, the European Ski Cup for women was held there.
Zum Zeri – Passo Due Santi, on the border between Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Liguria, is certainly one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the Apennines because at the highest point, 1.600 meters, you can enjoy views of the Ligurian and Tuscan coast and sea. It was established in 1971 with the construction of the first ski lifts and the first facilities for tourists; it has grown even bigger in recent times. Today, the ski area boasts 3 lifts, 9 slopes up to 1600 meters above sea level, stretching for about 25km and a play area for children of all ages. Recently, a 12 km trail and a 'snow park' were opened that is a great opportunity for snowboarding. The snowmaking system allows for perfect slopes at every moment. The refuge of the Passo Due Santi offers a range of services and hospitality at the restaurant, which is renowned for its local cuisine of Zeri. There are also hotels and campsites, where tourists can find all the necessary comforts for a holiday full of sports and nature.
Located in the heart of the Apuan Alps, the plateau of Careggine is a well known tourist area, with all the elements necessary to spend a relaxing holiday: it is surrounded by woods, mountains, meadows, streams and lakes, and it continues to arouse admiration and wonder. The ski resort is equipped for alpine skiing and with eating areas, Formica and Via Nova, three ski lifts and snow -making machines, while the slopes of Mount La Cima satisfy even the most expert skiers. The ski resort of Casone Profecchia started with the construction of ski lifts in the early 1960s, although many skiers already began skiing there thanks to rudimentary ski lifts after the war. Located in the upper Garfagnana area, a few kilometres from the border with Emilia Romagna, is a ski station of small size, suitable mainly for those who practice winter sports. There are two lifts with artificial snow, a ski hire and medical service. There is also a hotel with restaurant facilities, which facilitates the organization of ski holidays for individuals, families and groups. There is a ski lift at the Casone (high m.400 length, height m.120) and two ski lifts at ski school; there are three slopes (respectively m.450, 700 and 800) and a ski trail of 15 kilometres.
