Races and Marathons in Tuscany
Tuscany’s athletic events

Whether you’re a dedicated athlete or casual runner, there are plenty of events throughout the year to keep you fit or to get involved in some healthy competition. There are many marathons (42 km) and half marathons (21 km) all over Tuscany, giving you plenty of choices for where to get ready, set and go.

The White Marble event in February has both a marathon, half marathon and 10 km for all levels of fitness. Race past the sea and mountains in a truly spectacular landscape for an adrenaline rush like no other.

A 5km run of the walls of Lucca departs from the San Regolo rampart and finishes at the Santa Maria rampart in piazzale Vittorio Emanuele. It is held annually on June 21, the longest day of the year. The half marathon held in Versilia in September is another great option for running lovers. Speed along the Versilia section of the via Francigena with three routes catering to dedicated runners, casual joggers and those who want to bring their kids and pets along too.

The international half marathon in Prato takes place in April each year, taking you through the streets of Prato as you are cheered on by supporters. The well organised event has a variety of different lengths for different abilities, and even has a kid’s fun run for young, aspiring athletes.

Another event that takes place around this time is the Florence half marathon. Weave your way through the historic streets in what is one of the most impressive and novel places to pound your running shoes. The marathon held in Mugello in September begins and ends at Borgo San Lorenzo. It is 24km of glorious running paths through the Tuscan countryside, taking in San Piero a Sieve, Scarperia and the famous Mugello circuit race track. It also includes a non-competitive 4km Family Run to get the whole family exercising together.

The Cetilar marathon has an incredible finish line, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The flat route features art, history, the magnificent blue sea and the rich natural beauty of San Rossore park. Cetilar organise a marathon, half marathon, a walking marathon and a specially organised Christmas family run.

The Arezzo half marathon takes place in October, departing from piazza Guido Monaco and making its way around the city. Suited for more dedicated athletes, there are a number of significant prizes for the winners.

The Chianti Classico Marathon will have your heart pumping among vineyards and forests, immersed in the incredible landscape. With small, medieval villages and historic castles, it is a tour through history as much as a race. Taking place in June, it includes three different course lengths of 43km, 21km, and 10km, starting and finishing at Mercatale in val di Pesa.

Run by the water in Orbetello. Usually held in April, the half marathon goes past the unspoilt nature of the Orbetello lagoon. You’re sure to have a memorable experience as the adrenaline courses through you and you run past the beautiful, glistening water in this idyllic setting.
