Five exhibitions in five Tuscan villages

Five exhibitions make up the first phase of the "Terre di Uffizi" project, a collaboration between the Uffizi Galleries and Fondazione CR in order to deepen the link between the territory and the museum's collections.
Five exhibitions in five villages enhance the small museums of Tuscany: Poppi, San Godenzo, Anghiari, Montespertoli and Castiglion Fiorentino.

The exhibitions are also part of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri.

July 17 luglio - November 30 2021
"Nel segno di Dante"
Castello dei conti Guidi
POPPI
The exhibition titled "Nel segno di Dante" is part of the celebrations for Dante and presents works related to the three canticles of the Comedy. The paintings on display deal with themes and characters from the Casentino valley, a territory with which the poet had close relations. He stayed there several times as a guest of the Guidi Counts and on June 11, 1289, he took part in the battle of Campaldino, aged 24. Nicola Monti's work depicts one of the best-known episodes of Dante's Inferno, "Paolo and Francesca", and is a recent acquisition of the Uffizi Galleries and historically linked to the area.

July 26 - September 5 2021
"Dante Alighieri and Andrea del Castagno return to San Godenzo"
Visitor Center of the Casentinesi Forests National Park, Monte Falterona and Campigna
SAN GODENZO
For the Municipality of San Godenzo in 2021, there's a double anniversary: Dante's 700th anniversary and 600 years since the birth of Andrea di Bartolo di Bargilla, known as Andrea del Castagno, given his place of birth.
Among the portraits of illustrious men, the Uffizi houses frescoes from Villa Pandolfini in Legnaia. Those of Dante Alighieri and his famous effigy will spend the summer 2021 in the cool of the Casentino forests at the foot of Falterona, to celebrate the author and also to remember the meeting of the exiled Ghibellines, which took place in the abbey of San Godenzo in 1302, when Dante was already exiled with others from Florence and sentenced to death in absentia from January 1302. Soon, Alighieri would leave his Tuscany and never return.

August 31 2021 - January 6 2022
"The civilization of weapons and the Courts of the Renaissance"
Museum of the Battle of Anghiari
ANGHIARI
The exhibition aims to highlight the relations between city and suburbs in the Renaissance. Particular focus will be given to Renaissance Anghiari when men-at-arms loyal to various noble armies of the city knew the propaganda value of works of art and had an interest in the artists of their time. The exhibition is therefore centered on historical figures linked to Anghiari who were committed to transforming themselves from knights and soldiers into men of the court and culture.

September 25 - December 10 2021
"Giotteschi painters in Valdelsa"
Museum of Sacred Art of San Piero in Mercato
MONTESPERTOLI
In the rectory of the church of San Pietro in Mercato in Montespertoli, among the various 14th century panels, there's a small Madonna and Child attributed to the painter Lippo di Benivieni, an imaginative and expressive Giottesco of which the Uffizi possesses a Madonna and Child of almost identical dimensions, part of a famous polyptych of the Alessandri family. This exhibition compares them.
The juxtaposition will be useful to reflect on the diffusion of Giotto's style throughout the Valdelsa, an area populated by Taddeo Gaddi's works and those by other masters who closely followed Giotto's teachings.

October 2 2021 - January 6 2022
