Different and layered styles and materials for a captivating reflection on memory, myth, mysticism, poetry, philosophy

From March 22, Palazzo Strozzi in Florence opens its doors to the art of Anselm Kiefer, one of the most important German artists of the 10th-11th centuries, celebrated for his profound and layered research on themes of memory, myth, history, literature and philosophy.

Entering the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi, you are greeted by a monumental and powerful work (Fall of the Angel, 2022-2023) in dialogue with the severe Renaissance architecture, a prelude to an exhibition itinerary that alternates between historical works and new productions.

Painting, sculpture, installation and photography and a symbolic image as a starting point: the angels cast out of Paradise as a result of their rebellion against God, “fallen angels” representing all of humanity. A journey through allegories, figures and forms reflecting on identity, poetry, historical events, different philosophical thoughts. A journey of introspection on the human being, exploring the connections between past, present and future.

Kiefer uses different materials and techniques to bring to life an art with a strong physical and tactile presence, physically transforming raw materials, such as lead, wax, seeds, earth, flowers, sand and ash into impressive and evocative works, dense with layers, visual layers and sedimentations that offer multiple readings, always revealing new details and meanings to viewers.

What Anselm Kiefer brings to Palazzo Strozzi is a totally new exhibition project that enhances the vitality of his works, in dialogue with Renaissance architecture and in an ongoing reflection on the nature of human beings around themes, such as memory, history and war.

As with every exhibition set up at Palazzo Strozzi, there will be numerous side activities, lectures, guided tours aimed at teenagers, family kits, workshops, accessibility projects and special events.
