Let yourself be transported to discover a mystical and unique place in the world, visit the mysterious Abbey of San Galgano and discover the legend of the Templar, Galgano, who as a sign of renouncing the war, transformed his sword into a cross by setting it in the rock. History tells that he is buried in this place near his emblematic sword in the rock. Already present since 1227, it was consecrated in 1288 and was a very powerful economic and social center in history, so much so that the Republic of Siena made pacts there as early as 1257. Having survived the medieval famines, the raids of fortune companies and the plague, the Abbey suffered a period of degradation until the final deconsecration took place in 1786. Already in the nineteenth century an attempt was made to carry out a restoration which in 1924 by Gino Chierici opted for conservative restoration. Discover also the charming medieval village of Chiusdino perched on a knoll. 2.5-hour guided tour in the company of a qualified local guide.

This guided tour of San Galgano will start from the hermitage of Montesiepi, where your expert local guide will tell you the legend of Galgano Guidotti, a young knight who took refuge on the top of this hill following his renunciation of worldly life. Inside the Chapel you can also admire the frescoes of Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The tour continues by visiting the suggestive roofless Gothic Abbey of San Galgano, a place out of the ordinary full of charm and mystery. Built in 1218, along the Maremmana road, today we can admire the Abbey without a roof, with the sky acting as a ceiling creating an almost surreal atmosphere! After the visit to the Abbey you will move to the medieval village of Chiusdino, perched on a hillock of the metalliferous hills dominating the Val di Merse. The small village welcomes the Church of San Martino, known as “outside the walls”, the house of San Galgano and the Church of the Company from San Galgano. Here, the tour will finish.
