Libbiano trekking

Incredible hiking trail in the wildest area of the Monterufoli Caselli nature reserve, we will discover forgotten villages, imposing rocky environments and wild river ecosystems. 

We will start fom the village of Libbiano, one of the jewels of the Val di Cecina, characterized by its charming square and the remains of the fortress. From here, we can admire splendid panoramas that stretch from Volterra to the Cornate di Gerfalco. 

We will descend along the steep serpentinite cliffs of Frontosini, dotted with lush juniper scrubland, which will offer us wide views of the rugged green gorges surrounding the Trossa stream. This is an extraordinary place, a geo-site of "folds" characterized by a particular bend, where the rocky stratifications have undergone spectacular deformations. It is a magical place, enriched by gabbro boulders and crystalline pools.

We will ascend the magnificent forests of Farneta, where we will encounter the remains of several charcoal kilns, to finally reach a ford where a lunch break is planned in a spectacular river bend. We will rest by the clear waters of the river before using our energies to climb an old forest track towards Libbiano, amidst the magnificent panoramas of the gorges. 

Note: this route is for experienced hikers, there are steep ascents and descents, uneven terrain and fords.
