Let's discover the Accademia Gallery, a museum formed in the rooms that once housed a hospital and a convent and is rich in both emotions and history.
The Gallery was created together with the Academy of Fine Arts in 1784, thanks to the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena. It boasts the largest and most important collection in the world of paintings with a gold background, not to mention the Museum of musical instruments, a great passion of Grand Prince Ferdinando de 'Medici. The picture gallery was enriched early and extraordinarily with paintings from convents, monasteries and other religious institutions suppressed first by Pietro Leopoldo and then by Napoleon.
However, it was 1872 that marked the definitive turning point in the history of the complex, when it was decided to move Michelangelo's David there, subtracting it from the deterioration due to its original location outdoors, in Piazza della Signoria. The statue was harnessed in a complex wooden chariot and ran on rails through the streets of the center up to the Academy. On 22 July 1882, the museum was finally inaugurated.
