Villa Guinigi National Museum
The history of the city of Lucca on display through works of art

The Villa Guinigi National Museum in Lucca tells the stories of the city and its land through a spectacular collection of artworks made in Lucca.

The art, nearly all religious, represents the development of the figurative culture of Lucca from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century, documenting the evolution of artists from Lucca or elsewhere working in the city for religious and secular clients.

In the rooms of the 15th-century noble residence built by Paolo Guinigi, lord of Lucca, you can also admire a sizeable archaeological section, which has been filled with remarkable discoveries including the most recent ones. In the museum there are also some fine works of applied art, among which the precious 15th-century wooden inlays stand out.

Among the works on display there are sculptures by Donatello and Matteo Civitali, and paintings by Gherardo Starnina, Spinello Aretino, Americo Aspertini, Fra Bartolomeo, Vasari, Paolini and Batoni.
