The fascinating Este Fortress at the gates of Garfagnana

Located in a strategic position controlling the Mid Serchio Valley, the fortress occupies the highest portion of the charming village of Trassilico, a hamlet of Gallicano, at the gates of Garfagnana.

The first historical information relating to the fortress dates back to 740, when a Lombard cleric bought a piece of land there. Later, it became a fief of the Porcaresi family, who are thought to have built the original fortress.

Further evidence is that the surrounding village is crossed by narrow roads that lead towards the fortification, with a wealth of palaces and religious buildings attesting to the importance of the site during the Estense domination. In 1430, Trassilico was placed at the heart of the vicariate of the same name, a southern outpost of the duchy and a seat of the podestà (chief magistrate). The importance of the fortress was furthered by the fact that from here it was possible to easily control the vast territory that was rich in mineral deposits and waterways that were the driving force for various factories, particularly mills for the production of chestnut flour.

The Fortress can be reached from Gallicano along some fascinating paths that allow you to experience the natural beauty of these places, as well as its history. The fastest route is the path nicknamed "Zappello". Alternately, the "Chieva" trail allows you to enjoy a panorama of the Pania della Croce and Monte Forato. For the more experienced and the more daring, an excellent mountain bike route is "Le Capre".

Arriving at the Fortress with its restored walls and tower, you can enjoy a unique view of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps.
