The largest remaining Romanesque-era religious building on Elba Island

The Parish Church of San Giovanni (St. John) in Campo is, among the 16 built in the Romanesque style on the Island of Elba, the largest. Built, in accordance with the customs of the time, outside the town, the church is located along the road leading to Mount Perone, in the municipality of Campo nell’Elba.

In this building, dating from the second half of the 12th century, there is simplicity and sobriety in the forms typical of Romanesque churches. A single rectangular nave ends with a semicircular apse, while the entrance portal is surmounted by a small Greek-cross window and a bell gable, at one with the rest of the building. The roof, once formed by a wooden truss structure, is no longer visible, while leaning against the southern flank of the parish are the ruins of what must have been a small hermitage.

The Parish Church of San Giovanni in Campo is surrounded by beautiful chestnut trees, making this place perfect to stop during a walk.
