Explore the evolution of the territory in the Abbey of San Pietro in Moscheta, in Firenzuola

The Museum of the Historical Landscape of the Apennines in Firenzuola is housed inside the historic Abbey of San Pietro in Moscheta, founded in 1304 and vaunting elements of the original medieval building on the outside.

The museum’s aim is to document the history of the landscape of the Apennines, with a particular focus on the transformations of the vegetation and environment.

The first section is dedicated to the history of the Abbey of Moscheta and the effect that the Vallombrosian monks had on local human settlements and the forest. The second section is devoted to the landscape, where samples and models enable visitors to explore the landscape from inside.

The third section has five sets that show historical periods important for changes in the use of the territory: the landscape with woods and castles; the new, cultivated lands and forests; the invention of the Apennine landscape, with streets, towns and countryside in the 18th and 19th centuries; the landscape with villas and farms in the 19th and 20th centuries; and the uninhabited mountain transformed into a place teeming with life.

The painting gallery organizes educational activities and guided tours for groups and schools.
