Montecatini Terme Funicular
The two trains lead to and from the village of Montecatini Alto

Two unique names, Gigio and Gigia, once simply known as Number 1 and Number 2, the two red trains that are the Montecatini Terme Funicular run to from the historic village of Montecatini Alto.

This unique and characteristic transportation method hasn’t lost its charm since its inauguration on June 4, 1898, witnessed by Giuseppe Verdi himself. Because riding up on either one of the red cars, you discover that the atmosphere is just that: the wooden benches, the space to stand on the car’s exterior balcony, which has seen millions of views and millions of kisses, and the crossing of the trains half-way along the route, always exciting for children.

Greeting one another when the ascent and descent reach the same point puts tourists of all ages and from every corner of the world in a good mood.

The Montecatini Funicular has been modernized in the time since its very first journey, but its greatest characteristics have remained untouched.

It’s a quick way to reach the village of Montecatini Alto from the thermal town below without having to use a car, just a short walk from the thermal baths in Viale Verdi; the marvellous journey offers an impressive panoramic view, dominating the Valdinievole and filling you with a profound emotion, memorable for this secret Tuscany, from Leonardo to Pinocchio.
