In Monte Argentario, a fascinating karst cavity more than 900 meters long

Grotta degli Stretti (Narrows Cave) is located in the municipality of Monte Argentario, along the road connecting the towns of Orbetello and Porto Santo Stefano, and stretches about 930 meters in a horizontal line. Discovered in 1841 during construction work on the Orbetello dam, the first part of it is called the "Grand Duke's Hall" in honor of Grand Duke Leopold II, who visited it the following year.

The cave is characterized by stalactites, stalagmites, small corridors with flooded bottoms and three small lakes, one of which, the Egyptian Lake, is only passable with the help of a dinghy.

During the Neolithic age the cave was inhabited, as shown by interesting finds of bones and tools from that time.

Although it is an easy-to-explore cave, it is best to visit it only accompanied by speleology experts or environmental guides, who will be able to tell you about the peculiarities of this place, including the presence of four species of small crustaceans living in its protected waters.
