Augustinian Convent in Certaldo

The church and the cloister are unique for their architecture and sacred art

The Augustinian Convent is found in the heart of the town of Certaldo and is home to the Church of Santi Jacopo e Filippo, which contains the body of Blessed Giulia, and the Boccaccio funerary monument, likely constructed in the 12th century. The church overlooks a small square, once the cemetery of the convent, and prior to 1422 it was the office of the Augustinians who had full control over the surrounding areas.

The cloister, built over two floors and supported by brick columns with elegant stone capitals, is unique for its irregular trapezoid shape, which creates an interesting effect of perspective. Ascending the ladder takes you to the cell of Blessed Giulia, where she was imprisoned at her request until her death.

The museum complex is made up of not only the church and the cloister but also spaces where you can admire significant works of art, among which are the 14th-century triptych by Ugolino Nerio, student of great Siena painter Duccio di Buoninsegna, historic objects made by goldsmiths, spectacular ecclesiastical clothing, 17th-century paintings and sculptures and a wooden crucifix from the first half of the 18th century coming from the Church of San Pietro in Petrognano.
